Stephen Grayston (HAIIROISHI) – From My Personal View

Stephen Grayston is widely known in calligraphy circles by his brush name, Haiiroishi. He exhibits in both Japan and the UK on a regular basis and is a member of Shōku Shodō Kai in Tokyo, Japan. He has been practising Japanese calligraphy since 1997, dedicating decades to refining his discipline, technique, and expressive strength.

Stephen has previously held a full-month exhibition of his work at the Galleries in Basildon, Essex, as well as at a studio in Brighton, Sussex. Holding the 8th Dan and the highly respected Shihan (Master) title, his work and teaching reflect deep knowledge, precision, and respect for the traditions of Japanese calligraphy. Alongside his own practice, he also teaches a small class locally, sharing his skills and experience with others.

From my personal view, it was a real pleasure to meet Haiiroishi at one of our very first exhibitions. I was genuinely delighted when he expressed a wish to join us — and even more so when he chose to stay. He is always on time, always smiling, and brings a calm, positive presence to every event.

Despite having a very busy private life, Stephen is always ready to step in and help wherever he can. His consistency, generosity, and quiet dedication never go unnoticed. Every time I see him, he is smiling — and that, to me, speaks volumes about the person he is as much as the artist he has become.
